ADULT LITERACY

Adult illiteracy is one of Georgia's most urgent and impactful challenges. Adults with low literacy skills face significant barriers in an evolving workforce, and their children are more likely to experience difficulties with reading. Investing in adult literacy programs yields both immediate and long-lasting benefits, creating a stronger, more resilient community for the future.

In Georgia, approximately 1 in 6 adults (nearly 800,000) struggle with low literacy skills, costing the state about $1.26 billion annually in social services, lost tax revenue, and incarceration.

Low-literate adults are unable to pass on essential literacy skills to their children, leaving these children at a disadvantage and causing them to fall behind their peers academically. In fact, 72% of children with low-literate parents are likely to end up in the lowest literacy percentiles. This cycle of low literacy, poor health outcomes, and financial struggles often continues across generations, impacting future opportunities for these children and their families.
